People with job stress can cut their risks of coronary artery disease in half by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, a new study suggests.
MONDAY, May 13, 2013 — People who faced stress at work, but avoided four common, unhealthy lifestyles, had half the risk of developing coronary artery disease as those who didn’t make healthy lifestyle choices.
A Canadian Medical Association Journal study, published today, looked at more than 100,000 people from Belgium, France, Sweden and the United Kingdom who showed no evidence of cardiovascular disease when the study started, then tracked participants’ lifestyle and disease status for an average of 7.3 years.
About 31 per 1,000 of those who faced stress at work, smoked, drank alcohol, were physically inactive and were obese eventually developed heart disease, more than twice the rate as those who faced stress at work but didn’t make any of the unhealthy lifestyle choices.
“The risk of coronary artery disease was highest among participants who reported job strain and an unhealthy lifestyle. Those with job strain and a healthy lifestyle had half the rate of disease,” explained study lead investigator Mika Kivimaki, PhD, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at the University College London, London UK.
The study was observational, meaning researchers obvserved participants over time and then looked for patterns in their behaviors and disease outcomes. Kivimake cautioned that observational studies can’t establish that behaviors cause outcomes. That would require interventional studies, where participants are assigned to behave a certain way, after which their health outcomes are measured.
Most medical researchers would agree that lifestyle factors play a real role in development of cardiovascular disease, so if stress at work is unavoidable, the latest study suggests that maintaining a healthy weight, cutting out cigarettes and alcohol, and staying active are smart choices.
The U.S. Experience with Lifestyle Change
In the U.S. experience, cardiologist Reena Pande, MD said about her patients, “One of the greatest challenges faced by my patients in maintaining a healthy lifestyle is finding sustainable changes that they can integrate into their own lives. We physicians often give recommendations that are not feasible in the context of our patient’s particular life situation. We need innovative strategies to integrate wellness care into overall health care to help our patients succeed.” Pande is medical director of the Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Cardiologist Amy Leigh Miller, MD, PhD, also of Brigham and Women’s, noted about her patients’ experiences, “The primary challenges patients face with maintaining a healthy lifestyle revolve around cost, both financial and time – it requires them being willing to spend the extra time and money to prepare and eat healthy food, and to find a way to carve out time for exercise or to incorporate exercise into their daily lives.”
